THE BASS!!!

Hey Everyone,

Monty asked me to write a little blurb about the new bass. This is a bass manufactured by King Doublebass, a company from California that makes basses for most of the top Rockabilly bands in the world. This particular model is a Tiger King, named for the beautiful flamed maple that is used for the body, and is finished in a nice blue-black sunburst. The pin striping for all King basses is done by Don Whittle, a renowned hot rod guy who has been a painting mainstay in the SoCal rod and kustom scene for decades.

I bought the bass in January of 2006 and picked it up in Las Vegas, shipping it home in a very large fiberglass flight case. Initially, I tried a number of pick-up combinations with the bass (including the K&K and Revolution Solo systems) and was not happy with the results. Around this time, King Doublebass unveiled a new system that they had developed called the Doll Head which was receiving great reviews through the rockabilly bass community. I finally decided to pony up for one of these systems and received it in early December.

Installing a pick-up system on a double bass is usually a difficult task and needs weeks, months, or even years to settle in on a sound. The Doll Head system was the easiest installation I have ever undertaken and the sound of the bass was fantastic, even right out of the box. The system consists of two transducers (which are fitted into the wing of the bridge and onto the back of the neck) and a small pre-amp which allows great control and flexibility for the overall sound.

The bass is an amazing instrument and plays great - I look forward to many nights with it! If you want more information on the King Doublebass company and their products, go to their website at
